Dickens and Twilight???

What the Dickens? Twilight vampire Ashley Greene to play female Oliver Twist

Apparently, Charles Dickens now has a Twilight connection. The actress who plays Alice Cullen is going to be playing a female Oliver Twist in an upcoming adaptation of the novel. According to the screenwriter, it is going to be an "ultramodern" project that will also "combine Dickensian elements with a Gothic backdrop."

So, what do you think Dickens would have to say about this project?  Would he be pleased by such a development, or horrified? And would that depend on whether he's wearing a Dickens-as-author hat or a Dickens-as-brilliant-marketer hat?

  1. Well, it really depends, for me that is, how they do the adaptation. If it stays true to the novel than OK, but if not than it's another movie based off a book that is mediocre and sucks.

Dickens would be bewildered in general that we made movies at all out of his stuff, and with our technology right now he'd probably go with the flow at this point.

  2. I guess I'd have to know if Dickens cared more about the message getting through or the money... :/
It's possible that they could do a faithful adaptation, but it's really a question of how much they care.

  4. My first problem with this is that an actress is not, I repeat NOT, her characters. It will be Ashley Green playing a female Oliver, not Alice Cullen. It's not like the Twilight movies were introduced as "Cedric Diggory to play Edward Cullen" (although I might have gone and seen it if it had...) It was Robert Pattinson who played Edward. Even if the Oliver Twist movie will have a 'Gothic Twist' that doesn't mean it's because of Twilight or because it's the same actress.
