I have started twlight and reading Dracula alongside, I have noticed that if there was no Dracula or other early gothic writing the developement of vampires and gothic writing in modern day, would not be. There is however, a level of safistication with Dracula that seems to have been lost in Twlight.
Elaboration would be helpful because that does not make sense.
ReplyDeleteyou are right that it is a little unclear. What I meant to say was that with out the safistication of gothic writing such as Dracula, there might not be modern day gothic literature. And that Twlight is more about romance than gothic fiction.
ReplyDeleteAlright so embarrassing but I actually don't know how to post my own comment on the blog so I'm going to do it here. I haven't ever done this type of thing as you can probably tell haha. My comment is beside the point of these ones, basically completely unrelated so sorry to Brittany and Sarah but I suck at blogging.
ReplyDeleteAfter seeing the movie and beginning to read the book I have to say that the movie is far more fun and entertaining for me. The book is far more sappy and romantic, and being a guy I don't really like to read that kind of stuff. The movie on the other hand is far more up beat and has enough action to keep me entertained for longer periods of time. The way in which the author writes this book, it's clearly intended for women to read but it is very well written I must say.
Good to see you all on the blog! I detect a growing consensus that Twilight is a romance masquerading as gothic.
ReplyDeleteSo, what do you think about Dracula...is it gothic masquerading as romance? Or do you see Stoker's novel as fitting into an action/adventure mold?
I think that Dracula is more of adventure action based book that has a underlining story of romance, for me twlight is opposite. It is more romance and action is a small story plot on the side.
ReplyDeleteAs for the twlight movie,I agree the movie showcases more action. For me I think if both are showcased better in the movie there is going to be more men as well as women coming to see the movie.
My impression of Vampires is that the only way they can be killed is by removal of head, or by buring of heart or stabbing of the heart. My question is what happens to the vampire? To me the vampire is in this state of being between the living and the dead. So are they like Lucy and return to themselves and their beauty?
ReplyDeleteAlso do the same "vampire rules" apply to Twlight?
In the case of some one like Draclua, their soul goes straight to hell...with other vampires it pretty much depends on the author. As for Twilight's rules...vampires are almost impossible to kill, you have to rip their super strong bodies into pieces and burn the remains. Meyer implied that vampires have souls and can go to heaven pretty freaking heavily in the 2nd book.
ReplyDeleteTraditional vamps have quite a few weaknesses, but can be crazy hard to keep dead. Stake through the heart, garlic in the mouth, cut off the head and then bury said head at a crossroads was the surest way, since in some myths if you burned the body and blood got on the ashes they could come back and they'd remember who did 'em in.
My brain is like an encyclopedia of worthless crap, if you have any other questions I'd be happy to answer them. XD
